Lettuce Lettuce (Lactuca sativa, Lactuca the Day) is an annual, herbaceous growth plant of the Compositae family. It is cultivated since Roman times and its origins are Asia. It is mentioned by Herodotus of Theofrastos and Dioscorides with the name "thridacin" and "thridax".
The lettuce is eaten raw, plain or in salads but also cooked with meat (fricasse).
